Public Guardianship in Florida
The Office of Public and Professional Guardians

Florida Department of Elder Affairs
The Department provides most services through its Division of Statewide Community-Based Services, which works through the state’s eleven Area Agencies on Aging and local service providers to deliver essential services to a vital segment of the population. The Department also directly administers a wide range of programs, ranging from the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program, Office of Public and Professional Guardians and Communities for a Lifetime to SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders) and CARES (Comprehensive Assessment and Review for Long-Term Care Services).

Aging and Disability Resource Centers
Florida’s Aging and Disability Resource Centers are committed to helping persons age 60 and above (with and without disabilities) and those who care about them understand and navigate the complex web of available services, agencies and other options. Their goal is to help people find the information, resources and services needed to make informed decisions.

Alzheimer’s Disease Initiative
Florida’s Alzheimer’s Disease Initiative (ADI) provides services to meet the changing needs of individuals and families affected by Alzheimer’s disease and similar memory disorders. The ADI provides caregiver respite services and support. ADI respite includes in-home, facility-based (usually at adult day care centers), emergency, and extended care (up to 30 days) for caregivers who serve patients with memory disorders.

Additionally, the ADI includes services provided by Memory Disorder Clinics (MDCs). The MDCs provide comprehensive diagnostic and referral services for persons with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia.
